An Inconvenient Truth author Democrat Al Gore and moralist wife, Tipper, are backing off their wedding vows. Once, Al said of Tipper, that she's "someone I've loved with my whole heart since the night of my high school senior prom."

Legally separated, divorce looks likely on the way. After 40 years, this decision was not made at Britney Spears divorce speeds.

Tipper was not the usual vice presidential who heads up feel-good programs on behalf of the White House (usually this includes the stereotypical female role of nurturing children, be it through improving literacy or decreasing obesity). Instead, Tipper created the Parents Music Resource Center. Like other well-connected wives, she used Al's influence to move it forward.

 To be noted, no mention of a John Edwards-type scandal has appeared. Not even a Monica Lewinsky - Bill Clinton level event. Just two people who find marriage inconvenient.

How will this play on President Barack Obama? For starters, Al is not an elected official. Obama is still married, and no scandals is in any way connected to his marriage. Yet, Gore is a Democrat, Obama is pushing various action for gay marriage. The current gulf oil spill, North Korea and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is biggest on his to-do list, and probably, for Obama, working to the Iraq War follows soon after. In other words, talk shows will mention it, as will blogs like this one, but it will be inconsequential. The average Democrat's view of marriage is flexible, and open top revision. Republicans might crow about Al and Tipper's personal failure to stick with their marriage, but Al's political career is over anyway.

Jay Leno Plays the Straight Man, Barack Obama Does Not

In these days of manipulative media, from Rush Limbaugh to Jon Stewart, one thing is sure: If you want to be liked, you need to get on a talk show.

As some scrutiny finally kicks in by more serious media, Barack Obama campaigns on Jay Leno's show. Almost as good as Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, both masters of mugging the camera, we are seeing a new side of Obama: Love me tender.

Viewers might remark how much they love Obama, or are finding their love renewed. Drool? Droll? Either way, funnyman Jay Leno was clearly the straight man here tonight. He bent over backwards to appeal to Obama.

To Obama's credit, he is likable. John McCain lost the election, aside from Republican-hate and/or legitimately different views, because he was not as good looking or charismatic. It was Nixon vs Kennedy all over again. And Obama is smooth on camera. He has that cigarette commercial flair.

When the gloves finally come off, and intelligent deconstructions of what Obama is doing finally are not considered 'hating on my man', it will be interesting. When ObamaLove (t-shirts) moves to maturity, and his unified splendor runs cold (different t-shirt), what will have happened? A better economy? Freedom for Iraqis and the end of a war? Let's hope so.

How long before Obama's millions of lovers chase another man, and President Obama can get down to being president? He's bogged down by all of this, as necessary politically as it is. It could be worse, but John Kerry (who is much less funny) quit early.

Barack Obama Hasn't Said Anything Stupid (Yet)

President Barack Obama is not yet on the Top 10 Unfortunate Political One-Liners list. Democrat Bill Clinton is on it twice, Republican George W Bush is not even on it, and Republican Richard Nixon leads with the worst line.

Hopefully, Obama will remain off the list. He will say stupid things. How he responds is key. He has yet to show the quick humor of Ronald Reagan, and comes across very serious. He'll need to quickly say, "Oops," and move on.

While George W Bush was not a polished speaker like Obama, his challenges were slight - the wrong word, or poor pronunciation. With Clinton and Nixon, it was about lying.

Is there a Limbaugh factor? I could not say. I avoid all talk radio. The liberals and conservatives alike are filled with gassy self-righteousness. Some try to be funny, others are so serious that only bran cereal will fix their problem.

Rush Limbaugh, maybe the best known of all political radio hosts, is smart, but his agenda is not about focused, objective analysis. He is all about being against whatever the Democrats are scooping. One recent campaign was to cause chaos in the Dems primaries, to skew the numbers by convincing Republicans to vote Dem, then switch back. This isn't playing fair, but it is legal.

Easy toss out arguments against Limbaugh influence, "He's been busted for drugs," "He's arrogant," "He's conservative and stupid." Sorry, that just means you dislike him. Just like when Bill Clinton was playing with Monica Lewinsky's cigar, people ignore personal lifestyle choices.

A few days ago, I asked about which celebrity bamboozled you into voting for their guy. The most notable celebs to announce were not Republicans, but two very wealthy Hollywood Democrats.

Say what you will about extremist right-winger Limbaugh using his celebrity voice to influence to impact an election. Look at the highly publicized Jack Nicholson and Tom Hanks endorsements.

We are lemmings.

Our Readers Who Comment have also expressed special interest (or disgust) with a story that asked if conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" -- in which he urged Republicans to vote for Clinton in the Democratic primary -- actually held down Obama's totals. Limbaugh called off the operation yesterday, Alec MacGillis and Peter Slevin report, saying he wants Obama to be the party's pick, because "I now believe he would be the weakest of the Democrat nominees."

Limbaugh is a polarizing figure and has supporters in the comment string today, but most of those who bothered to write are not fans; many remind us that Limbaugh has had drug abuse problems, and several wonder if my colleagues at WaPo have lost their way in even bothering with the story, which I really liked.

Republicans Are Winning By Not Losing

The race was, and is, the Democrats' to lose. If for no other reason, there was enough absolute hatred of George W Bush (and for some, this hated included the war in Iraq) that all a Democrat had to was wait until election day, and poof, anyone they nominated was in.

No longer. While John McCain has locked nothing up, he has more than a fighting chance to win. The Democrats famously imploded organizationally and elected, by default, George Bush instead of what they wanted (anybody but George).

Implosion issues included Barack Obamas unwilling to work under female Hillary Clinton, Hillary Clinton unable to shake the ghost of Bill Clinton, but tiny things are eating at them as well. Obama's church is racist. He may be as PC as the next black man, but his church is not. Hillary and Bill made massive amounts of money, distancing them from the average man they are appealing to. These things and more are ticking away at their invincibility. John McCain has, so far, been safe from such.

Obama's "Bitter" Comment Halts His Momentum

One of two things happened: Barack Obama either himself wrote a very stupid speech, or, approved one written by someone who believes as Obama believes.

And no, it is not true, John McCain and Hillary Clinton did not team up to hack into his laptop to alter a speech that originally said, "Those hardworking men who are proud to be American." This is not American Idol, which changed a famous Christian song Shout to the Lord to be as deep as Kumbaya.

What is the Hubbub?
According to the Washington Post, Barack Obama said,
"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are going to regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

In one tiny paragraph, he insults small town people, religious people, Clinton supporters, Bush supporters, gun supporters. He also insult these small town people directly for having voted for George W Bush because, by suggesting they fell through the cracks under George H W Bush, and Bill Clinton, plus George W Bush (first term), he says that after 16 years of falling through the cracks, they came and voted for George W in record numbers this last time.

What has happened is a grave mistake for Barack Obama, and support for John McCain. It does not make sense that most of the people he insulted would vote Democrat after this, especially for Obama.

Will this fade away? You bet. The Obama supporters need this to go away. They'll play it as no a big deal, and point out apologies.

DAVIE, Fla. - Hillary Rodham Clinton won the Florida Democratic primary Tuesday night, an event that drew no campaigning by any of her presidential rivals and awarded no delegates to the winner.

But Clinton promptly declared it a welcome victory.

The New York senator, fresh off her lopsided loss to Barack Obama in last weekend's South Carolina primary, arranged a rally in the state as the polls were closing, an evident attempt to gain campaign momentum.

She and Obama collide next week in a coast-to-coast competition for delegates across 22 states.

"I am convinced that with this resounding vote, with the millions of Americans who will vote next Tuesday, we will send a clear message that America is back and we will take charge of our destiny once again," she said to a boisterous crowd.

Last year, the national party stripped Florida of its delegates as punishment for moving its primary ahead of Feb. 5 and the candidates pledged to bypass the state. At stake Tuesday were 185 delegates.

Will A Hillary Clinton Presidency Be The End of the World?

The end of the world as we know it. That's the summation of many people's view if Hillary Clinton is elected. I say no.

Why?

A similar crying was heard when George Bush was re-elected, and in his second election, captured more popular votes that Reagan, Clinton, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy. He beat them all. And, the world did not end.

What will change? Nothing. Lots of "A new era for women," hogwash. True, yes, but significant? No. If she's a bad president, it'll not be anything new. We aren't voting in a gender, we are voting in a president.

Just look at Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as an example. We cheered that a woman was now in the office of Speaker of the House. Male dominated until then. She's not as useless as "Year of the Woman" Carol Mosely Braun, but Democrats are hardly enamored with her incompetence. George Bush still gets what he wants, and the Dems no longer have Denny Hastert to kick around.

Take a look deeper at Hillary. Those who hate her, like those who hate Bush, hate her, in part, because she leads a machine that gets things done. Granted, just like comrade Barack Obama, she's been doing more running for president than serving as a state senator, but laziness, unintelligence, and ineffectiveness are not part of her lifestyle. Type A, not a slacker. Like Chicago's Daley machine, things would work.

There are real issues, like her views, to consider. However, she will not create more abortions, impact capital punishment either way, smoke pot, and scandals with pages and interns? You gotta be kidding.

Hillary's smart, and hard working. Most, if not all, candidates are, but few will disagree, when it comes to doing well on SATs, she'd be up there.

Iraq? Don't think for a minute electing her provides a carte blanche pull-out. Congress still has to approve things. Also, when she, or whomever, hits office, she will be provided with data regarding terrorism and such that ordinary senators never see. Will it influence to stay? Who knows, but it is possible. I do not think George Bush sent our boys in there to lose.

The end of the world as we know it? Great song by REM, but nothing more.

Standing by His Woman: Former president in town to promote wife for the job

Some people want to criticize Bill Clinton for campaigning for his wife, but I say good show. She stood by her man when he was looking down in the mouth, and now he is stepping up to do the same.

Barack Obama is coming on strong. With Oprah Winfrey now behind him, and the public growing vaguely cynical of the Hillary Clinton machine, she needs to be concerned. Furthermore, the Republicans aren't sitting on their hands. Mike Huckabee has snuck up from nowhere to present evangelicals an option other than social liberal Rudy Giuliani, and conservative but Mormon Mitt Romney. In any event, one of those three is likely to threaten the Hillary Clinton juggernaut.

The story is the same: get the nomination, get the national victory. And the story remains as difficult, hence, Hillary needs the fire power only glamor boy Bill can pull off.

There's a fight few expected, but just might be. As Obama's interest increases, and as Hillary keeps being presented as left wing, while Huckabee, previously a long-shot, starts coming into being his own candidate, while Rudy is being seen as a morally liberal, fiscally moderate conservative -- well, you can seem it is all becoming undone.

Who is this Mike Huckabee, anyway? He is a religious guy, same as fellow Arkansas ex-governor, Bill Clinton. The same denomination, only Huckabee is less ashamed to admit it. Like Clinton, he is a musician, playing bass guitar in his rock-and-roll band Capitol Offense.

Also from Hope, AR, he lifted himself up from little to much, again, like Clinton. But now, his views and lifestyle are much different than Clinton, both Bill and Hillary. He's different than all but Romney, and maybe Fred Thompson as well.

My bet is Pat Robertson is regretting the day he endorsed Rudy Giuliani, as it increasingly appears Huckabee might be the Republican's only hope for the White House.

As for Obama - the jury is still out, but it is no longer the Hillary Clinton Roadshow. She'll come back with guns blazing, so don't you Obama fans get smug. He can pull it out, but she'll not go down without a little dirt, and maybe a little blood on her hands.

Are Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton The Same Person?

Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton? Are they the same candidate in different parties? Some people are beginning to say so.

Everyone knows that Hillary Clinton is the most pro choice candidate in either party. Unlike her husband, Bill Clinton, she has not gone out of her way to dance, to say abortion is wrong but she supports the legal right to do it. For that, I give her points for integrity and honesty. For those in the abortion is murder camp, it must be illegal. They have no other choice, just in the same those who think capital punishment is morally wrong. And, for those who think it is acceptable legally, they cannot also say it is morally wrong to kill a baby. Logically, a person has really to choose one position of the other. Bill Clinton, as has Rudy Giuliani, taken both positions at once. Pretty much a cop-out.

Not Hillary Clinton. You won't hear pretend she thinks abortion is morally wrong. She's a pragmatist, but knows the double-view position is weak.

So then comes along a strong candidate like Giuliani. He's a darling among Republicans, and dangerous to Hillary Clinton. Why? Because his essential view on abortion equates with hers: keep abortion legal. She might have a more consistent view, but he will steal votes from abortion-minded Republicans.

Naturally, this is hardly the only issue driving the campaign, but in other areas, like perceived international leadership and dealing with Muslim terrorists, Giuliani trumps Clinton. I'm not the only who is noticing this. Leaders among a core group of evangelical voters agree, like those at the Family Research Council.

Meanwhile, Clinton is leading Barack Obama by truckloads of support. I'm beginning to think the election for him is over, and that he is running for 2012. If Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, but loses the general presidential election, Obama can position himself as a leader among men. By 2012, any comments about experience have no impact, and people will be used to his unusual name. He'll be a brand name to be reckoned with.

AUSTIN – A leading conservative Christian leader said Wednesday that Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Rodham Clinton are virtually "indistinguishable" to many social conservatives, and that those voters will abandon the GOP if Mr. Giuliani is the presidential nominee.

"There is very little difference between the Republican and Democratic parties when you look at advancing candidates like this," said Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.

In a conference call with reporters to promote this month's Values Voter Summit in Washington, Mr. Perkins acknowledged that religious conservatives at the heart of the Republican base are divided over the party's presidential field.

But he warned that nominating the former New York mayor, who supports abortion rights and gay rights, would probably drive away enough anti-abortion voters to put Mrs. Clinton in the White House.

"Will evangelicals vote for him? Yes, there will be some," said Mr. Perkins. "But some social conservative support is not enough to win."

Why Gore lost against George W Bush in 2000 can be argued all you want. Now, in 2008, Bush is not running, Hillary Clinton is being pushed by Republicans as too liberal, and Barack Obama is being smeared as too green. Al Gore has neither baggage, and was never married, so far I know, to Bill Clinton.

He could've been a contender.

Not so, says druggie son. He used no words. No, no. Al's son is a man of action. To send his message to Dad, he drive his car, the cops allege, over 100 mph, with drugs in the car.

Sure, his son is 24, and no longer Daddy's boy, but, anyone named Gore, outside of Leslie Gore (she was a 1960s pop singer for you kids), will impact the possibility of election. The fact that he is Al Gore III can't help.

Whether Al Gore ever intended to run is a something we can only speculate about, but, when compared to Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama, he may have been a real force. Now, no one outside of Woody Harrelson would want a drug-infested family in the White House. Even George Bush went sober.

After having been busted with pot possession in December 2003, you would have thought Dad would say, "Now, son, when I said I wanted pharmaceuticals more available, I met for sick people, not you, you dumb ass."

I guess that message never sunk in. Normally, you might expect that story in a gossip blog, but, this is news which impacts November 2008.

What can you expect from a guy who grew up in a state where tobacco is a main crop? Pot, cigarettes? The difference must not be so easy for him. It could be he thought one drug was the same as the next. Not so. These drugs he was busted with will only ruin Al Gore II's chance to be president, while tobacco cigarettes will kill you.

Why Scooter Libby's Commuted Sentence Will Not Hurt George Bush

Scooter gets commuted. Libby's not on the lam. Bush decided not to pardon, but to commute Lewis Libby's sentence.

A commuted sentence basically says, "You're guilty, but you need not go to prison."

The original sentence, 30 months in prison, is on the books, but, in essence, completed, or, rather, deemed unnecessary.

Politically, this won't hurt or help anyone but Libby. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama will not gain from this. They cannot say, "Republicans are no good because of Scooter Libby." The impact will be forgotten by November 2008.

A lot of jabbering on talk shows will go on, but, any president knows controversial decisions made over a year before an election are inconsequential.

Republicans will not be hurt either. Any candidate worth his public relations salt has steered himself away from George Bush. They may agree with a Bush decision, like the Iraq War, but, his name will not be emphasized. George W is not running for re-election, and he, himself, is just doing what presidents do. Bill Clinton did this, and, famously, Gerard Ford did it with Nixon. No one remembers the Bill Clinton criminals, and no one will remember Libby.

Billy Graham, Ruth Graham - Why They Matter to Hillary Clinton

Mrs. Ruth Graham has died. She was more famously known as Mrs. Billy Graham. She was 87.

Why this matters to Hillary Clinton's campaign? Or, to Barack Obama's campaign, or any among the Republicans running for president?

In many ways, he's retired. Ruth's death only magnifies this. The next president is likely to be "Billy Graham free."

Billy's 88. In 2008, then, he'll be at least 89. With Ruth Graham's passing, a woman Billy has remained devoted to since he met her in the lawn of the esteemed Wheaton College, he may simply not be himself. His own health is faltering.

Billy has been counsel to all American presidents since Eisenhower. While he no doubt offered spiritual insight and prayer, he also offered friendship, and the kind of advice and support which comes from a friend. Presidents have few friends who aren't pushing a political agenda.

Bill Clinton and George W Bush share in common a great respect for Graham, and cite him as a major influence in their spiritual life. With Jimmy Carter, they all recently joined together to help christen the Billy Graham Library.

I saw Billy Graham at a Crusade once. He's the real deal. He's sincere, and is not about the Almighty Buck. Not all evangelists are as inclusive, as diversely thinking, and as committed to something bigger than themselves as him. In fact, noting the need for Christian ministries to have honest finances, he helped found Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

What Ruth Graham's death represents is the beginning of the end of an era. Billy's still around, but not the jet-setter he once was. This is a sad day for him.

Hillary, Obama, and rest aren't losing God. If they believe, they believe. Graham's not God. He never claimed to be. And, if they believe, losing Graham will not be losing their only counsel. Hillary Clinton, until recently, never claimed to be anything more than an occasional church-goer. She has never said, unlike husband Bill, that Christ is an important part of her life. She is, for all intents and purposes, a practical atheist.

The jury is still out on Obama. It looks like he has a faith in Jesus Christ, but how deep is hard to say. How much of his faith is wrought of looking to God to solve Man's problems, and how much is wrought looking to Man to solve God's problems is known only to Barack Obama and to God Himself.

But, he was born August 4, 1961, meaning while he grew up probably very aware of Billy Graham, any personal connection to him is unlikely. George W Bush met him through his father, and later, as he sought out his own spiritual renewal. Obama had no such process, and has not had familial connections.

What Hillary and Obama are losing, though, is the tradition of Graham's counsel. That tradition is, in a sense, extending back far before Graham, but to the original settlers who came for religious freedom. We aren't losing that freedom to believe, but, with major voices as respected as Billy Graham's no longer in the big picture, the White House will seem, perhaps, more secular. No one wants a state run religion, and no one wants a president with a phony, politically convenient faith. However, if they do have a true faith, we want them to be wise in its context. Billy Graham offered that wisdom, albeit imperfectly.

Barack Obama Faces More of the Same Tony Rezko Trouble

In the eking problem which will not go away, it seems that Barack Obama's claims to naivete are not quite true.

Obama's letters for Rezko: NOT A FAVOR? As a state senator, he went to bat for now-indicted developer's deal (Chicago Sun-Times)
says,

"As a state senator, Barack Obama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting his political patron Tony Rezko's successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens.

"The deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama's former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama's state Senate district."

This may become another Bill Clinton problems. Bill's trouble wasn't that he was fooling around with White House slut intern Monica Lewinsky, but that he lied under oath. Politicians have never been known as people of character, so the dalliance he had with Monica was no big deal. Hillary (his wife) didn't care. Republicans pretended to, but it was the lie that caused him most grief, not the action he was getting.

Barack Obama's trouble in not infidelity. Seems to me that in this regard, he is a man of honor. It could be that, however, Rezko, mixed with the growing obviousness that Obama never intended to serve Illinois as Senator but as US President, that will cause him problems.

Hopefully, if it is truly a minor blunder, Obama will fess up and move. The only way voters will care in 2008 is if Rezko comes up with a blue dress.

NPR, famously Republican, conservative and moral as far as family values goes (oops, my mistake, that's not NPR, but they are, in fact, reporting, as seen in the link below) has reported that Southern Baptist Bill Clinton planned to dump his Methodist wife.

It isn't news because Bill's a Baptist, and no one really believes Hillary follows the conservative teachings of Methodist founder John Wesley, or Wesley's inspiration, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. As far as Bill's view, who knows? The jury is still out whether he is a Christian who has slipped away, struggles but holds tight, or is just a pretender. God gets to make that call. Any Christian will tell you that all have slipped and fallen short of the glory of God (goodness knows, if they don't, they are illiterate), and might not be willing to judge Bill Clinton.

It is news because someone made it news, and Hillary's free ride is ending. That said, expect dirt to be dished back and around from Barack Obama, from Republican counterparts. I expect this election to be the dirtiest in history.

We aren't concerned. There is absolutely no evidence Hillary Clinton supporters will concern themselves with marital issues as a sway in voting patterns.

If Hillary is Elected, What Do We Call Bill?

Bill Clinton was president for two terms. Had he been president for two minutes, he would have earned the lifestime right to be called Mr. President.

Hillary, while Bill was in office, was the first lady. Now, as she runs for president, things have changed. Or, if she wins, that is. The First Lady would get an upgrade, Mrs. President. They could call her Ms. President, but no one is silly enough to think she is not married.

What do we call Bill, then, while she is in office? Do reporters call out, "Mr. and Mrs. President!" or "Mrs. President, Mr. President!" or, in cases that follow as such (where 'first lady' was previously appropriate), "Mrs. President, what does Mr. President think about ---?"

I guess Chelsea will be among the few without a problem. Or Monica.
